1. Surface Course Surface course or wearing course is the top most layer of flexible pavement which has direct contact with the vehicular loads. Since it is directly in contact with traffic, good quality aggregates and high dense bitumen or asphalt is recommended for the construction of surface course.

Dense asphalt concrete is often used as the 'basic' surface layer. 2. Asphalt Concrete for very thin layers (AC-TL) "Asphalt for surface courses with a thickness of 20 mm to 30 mm, in which the aggregate particles are generally gap-graded to form a stone to stone contact and to provide an open surface texture".

either as inlay or overlay or as a surface course for new construction, are: Dense asphalt concrete grading, low voids Prevents water ingress Dense grading enhances fatigue resistance Resistance to deformation Sustainable product Our Dura Multi®+ mix has fuel resisting properties Duralayer Multi® technical data *Typical value for surface texture.

Step 5: Binder and Surface Course . Once the sub base is laid and any soft areas are identified and repaired, it is time to add the binder. The binder layer is large aggregate mixed with oil, making it very strong and durable. The binder layer can be thought of as the strength of any new asphalt surface. Step 6: Install New Asphalt Surface

NatraTex is an asphalt surface course that is created by mixing natural aggregates with a clear binder. When applied to different levels of thickness, NatraTex products can be used as a surface course in the creation of footpaths, playgrounds, cycle routes, driveways, car …

15-01-2021· All surface courses should be specified in 0.25-inch (5 mm) increments except Item 424 Type A that can be specified as thin as five-eighths inches (0.625" [16 mm]). 406.1.1 Item 441 Asphalt Concrete Surface Course, Type 1, (446 & 448), PG64-22. This item is for roads with less than 1500 trucks in the opening day traffic. Lift thickness can be

· Asphalt Surface Course refers to an aggregate, sand, and asphalt cement mixture used as the final surface course placed in a lift (often above the intermediate asphalt pavement course), in a roadway application, driveways, parking lots, and trails.

HOT-MIX ASPHALT – BINDER AND SURFACE COURSE (BDE) Effective: July 2, 2019 Revised: November 1, 2019 Description. This work shall consist of constructing a hot-mix asphalt (HMA) binder and/or surface course on a prepared base. Work shall be according to Sections 406 and 1030 of the Standard Specifications, except as modified herein. Materials.

Surface Course. The layer in contact with traffic loads. It provides characteristics such as friction, smoothness, noise control, rut resistance and drainage. In addition, it prevents entrance of surface water into the underlying base, subbase and subgrade (NAPA, 2001 [1]).

14-01-2019· This mix is only used for surface courses. It has a smoother surface finish than the dense-graded. Its low cost of placement counteracts the high cost of producing it. However, make sure that you are not clogging or sealing the pores as this action will dramatically reduce and degrade asphalt performance and stability.

24-08-2016· Asphalt Surface Course refers to an aggregate, sand, and asphalt cement mixture used as the final surface course placed in a lift (often above the intermediate asphalt pavement course), in a roadway application, driveways, parking lots, and trails. Asphalt surface course mixture typically includes smaller aggregate sizes than Intermediate and Base Courses of asphalt.

The wearing/surface course (the uppermost surface) can be 'coloured' by using a coloured binder, often with coloured aggregates, or by incorporating coloured, coated chippings into a HRA wearing course. ... The basic premise of a bitmac or asphalt surface is that the material is laid while hot and viscous, ...

01-01-2016· (a) Surface of binder/base course in front of the wearing course screed; (b) Surface of wearing course before roller compaction. Based on the experience with conventional compact asphalt, the thick layer packages were initially rolled with low static load, then compacted four times with vibration and high load and finally statically smoothed.

Our asphalt ranges includes: Surface courses. The surface course is the layer that is in direct contact with the traffic load and its smooth surface improves traction and reduces skidding. The surface layer should be tough enough to prevent distortion from traffic as well as prevent excessive water getting into the layers beneath.

Surface Course The layer of the asphalt surfacing immediately below the porous friction course or which directly supports the traffic. (Previously called 'Wearing Course'). Tack Coat A thin film of bitumen emulsion to improve the adhesion between two courses of asphalt or between an existing surface and a new asphalt layer.

It's chief purpose is to distribute load to the base course The binder course generally consists of aggregates having less asphalt and doesn't require quality as high as the surface course, so replacing a part of the surface course by the binder course results in more economical design.

ULTICOLOUR is available as a 6mm, 10mm and 14mm size SMA surface course for a wide range of applications. ULTICOLOUR coloured asphalt is ideal for use in play areas and pedestrian zones, driveways to parking areas, etsate roads to highly trafficked bus lanes.

Hot rolled asphalt (HRA) may occasionally be used as a surface course on footpaths or driveways. This is a very fine-grained material, more commonly used on public highways, and relies on the presence of embedding chippings of a hard stone to improve durability and to add traction.

The wearing course is the upper layer in roadway, airfield, and dockyard construction. The term 'surface course' is sometimes used, however this term is slightly different as it can be used to describe very thin surface layers such as chip seal.In rigid pavements the upper layer is a portland cement concrete slab. In flexible pavements, the upper layer consists of asphalt concrete, that is a ...

04-08-2018· Wearing Course or Surface Course: Ensure that approved material is used and each consignment test certificates shall be provided for Asphalt cement used (AC 40-50). Temperature of mixture to be measured at site and it should not less than 150°C. Consistency of mixture shall be checked for each 200 tons.

Resurfacing is the placing of one or more courses of hot mix asphalt over an existing hard surface pavement. This is the most often used means for salvaging and extending the service life of older deteriorating pavements. ADVANTAGES OF HOT MIX ASPHALT 1. Versatility Hot mix asphalt pavements can be designed to

when an unacceptable lot is overlaid, the overlay shall be of the surface course mixture specified for that lot and shall be a minimum of 1.5 inch thick if that mixture is hot mix asphalt surface course mix i-5 and 2 inches thick if that mixture is hot mix asphalt surface course mix i-4 or mix i-4 hd.

A typical highway consists of 8″ asphalt surface course, 4″ binder course, 4″ base course, and 12″ aggregate with standard wire mesh or framing, and thus we have calculated the estimate considering the following components: Excavation (5,2800 length × 128 width × 2.33 deep × 1.3 fluff factor )/27 is 7,581,924 yd 3 at $56/yd 3 cost ...

24-10-2016· A stronger surface course and laid a little thicker 30 - 40mm in a normal thickness; 30% 14mm Hot Rolled Asphalt. A very close textured and hard wearing surface course normally used for carriageways and industrial estates where heavier usage is anticipated. Will resist static turning from heavy vehicle and forklift trucks.

Binder course. Binder courses are designed to withstand the highest shear stresses that occur about 50 – 70 mm below the asphalt surface. The binder course is therefore placed between the surface course and base course to reduce rutting by combining qualities of stability and durability.

In relation to surface course HMA mixes, base course mixes usually contain larger maximum aggregate sizes, are more open graded and are subject to more lenient specifications. Figure 4. Unbound aggregate base course place and graded on SR 97 south of Bend, Oregon. Subbase Course. The subbase course is between the base course and the subgrade.
