new lee valley belt sander question

Oct 08, 2012· (I'm already getting a bit of 'shimmy' from the belt.) So, when I saw a two-pulley sander/grinder [1] on offer at Lee Valley for a reasonable price I thought, "Hmmm. That may be the way to go." A bonus was that the Lee Valley machine takes the same size sanding belt as the Delta, so all my spare belts would remain useable

Dec 19, 2016· Same is true with belt sanders with platen. With a 1" belt sander you will need a very light touch (pressure) when sharpening your turning tools to keep belt tracking straight. I used a 3" x 21" Sears hand held belt sander (w/platen) when first started turning. Built little stand which clamped onto a bench to hold sander.

Sep 13, 2008· Just received my new strip sander and am in the process of sharpening my things. I watched Nicks strip sanding segement and was wondering if anyone knows where to get the surface conditioning belt he was talkjng about. By the way I am a new member new to woodworking and new to computers! Its been days just trying to figure out how to post.

Jun 05, 2014· Belt grinder question Belt grinder question. By Trip, January 19, 2013 in ... This is contrary to what other have posted, but IF a small 3x24 or a 4x24 inch belt sander (commonly associated with wood working) pops up at decent price at garage sale or yard sale, its better than nothing and will do pretty good job of dressing and finishing metals ...

Mar 21, 2012· I have a new 2" belt sander. I'll see if I have it and rig it up to my new sander and show you how it can be done. My new sander is high speed and only runs down toward the edge. I'm guessing we would want to use the ceramic belts for this. I only have wood cutting belts for my new sander since that's what I bought it for.

Sep 30, 2012· I use white compound on the leather belt. I will point out that using a belt sander will almost certainly overheat the edge, unless you cool it and use water proof belts. In use, I have only seen this be an issue a hand full of times. A couple of edges have rolled after sander sharpening that didn't roll after hand sharpening.

Sep 01, 2010· Dayton sander grinder questions ... The unit functions well as a belt sander/grinder as is. ... Lee Valley sells 30 belts and the zircon belts in 40 to 120 grit. I already had a three pack of 80 grit purchased locally. I ordered 2 40 grit belts; and one each of the finer grits through 1200. That should cover the waterfront for me, and give me a ...

Sep 25, 2012· Lee Valley sells a 1" x 42" belt sander without a motor but there are any number of places that sell a 1" x 30" belt sander starting at $30.00 or so from Harbor Freight to the $400.00 or more range. I opted for one from Enco which looks similar to almost every other 1x30 sander on the market.

Nov 19, 2006· In this months issue, the Rigid spindle sander was selected as Best Overall and Value. On investigating further, mention was made that the sanding sleeves are not carried any longer at HD and I had read that somewhere months ago also. I like the idea of have the ability to switch from spindle to belt …

May 13, 2016· The 1x30 sanders will be alright to start with, however buying belts can get expensive. Generally speaking, in good quality bets, a 1x30 belt, at 30 square inches, costs about half of what a 2x72 belt at 144 square inches.

09-28-2011, 11:35 AM. Re: lee valley (viel) belt sander: wheel alignment. SO. I had a look and did some measuring on my sander. The platen is square to the frame of the machine on mine but would be readily adjustable if it were off by a bit by either shimming it or by realigning (bending it) it with a vise and mallet.

Aug 07, 2009· Common Questions. I first heard about using a 1" belt sander in Leonard Lee's book, The Complete Guide to Sharpening. His description was very brief and didn't answer basic questions I had, so I'm going to try to answer those here. Brent Beach also uses a belt grinder and gets credit for finally pushing me in this direction.

Oct 27, 2013· I thinking of buying or making a sander to work on miters. I am curious as Logan makes a 10" one for $143, Skyline has several 12" sanders at a bit more than twice that price (used) and ~$1000 for new; and so I wondered what the difference was, and how does this affect performance.

15Z0205 - Set of 2 Bow Sanders (Sm. & Lg.) For working on curved forms, these tools offer a simple, effective way to sand contours evenly without digging in. Designed to work with standard sanding belts, they keep the belt tensioned firmly between two ends of a sturdy fiberglass bow. You can bear down on the work, but with no rigid backing, the ...

Sep 12, 2008· Here's what to look for in a new belt sander. Eliminate gouging with a sanding frame. A sanding frame ($50 to $80) is like training wheels for a belt sander. Unlike training wheels, you'll never want to remove the sanding frame. A slick surface on the bottom of the frame rides on your material, and the sander is suspended within the frame ...

The belt lets you smooth inside curves and flatten broad surfaces, while the disc excels at shaping outside curves and precise fitting of miters. You can orient the sanding belt vertically or horizontally for best access to the work, and because the belt is above the level of the disc, it won't get in the way of work wider than the platen.

I also have the Lee Valley belt grinder that I use for chisels, plane iron etc. If I had to have only one. I'd pick the belt grinder. Note that grinding is step 1 of sharpening for hand tools, used to change the blade angle, or take out nicks. The next steps are using a stone …

May 08, 2014· I found this grinder at a yard sale for 20 bucks! The attached motor was not correct so I installed a new motor. I added a switch and four newer heavy duty ...

Re: new lee valley belt sander question As Gwilki mentioned earlier, I don't think that holder is meant to work with the sander/grinder. I've had the same sander for at least 10 years and use it primarily for knife sharpening although it's also useful for numerous little sanding tasks. 95% of the time I have the 15-micron belt on the machine and it does a great job for knives.

Feb 27, 2006· My question is whether or not to buy a quality 3″ 0r 4″ belt sander. I would rather achieve good finish on my furniture by planing/scraping, so if I take that approach, would I still get enough use out of a belt sander to justify the cost? I've spent so much money on power tools, I'm starting to get sticker shock, ha ha.

Dec 02, 2014· I have an old Rodgers combo edge / profile sander machine that uses a thin sanding belt to bend to fit the different profiles needed .On the machine I have you make a mold of the opposite of the profile you want to sand, then engage the profile shoe that holds the desired mold .

Apr 23, 2019· I now have a 1" strip sander that I use for a lot of sharpening, both knives, scissors, and yea some turning tools. Works much better than the small belt sander and it's much quicker to change belts. The one I got is from Lee Valley and you have to add the motor and switch. Went from those to my old Craftsman 6" 3450 rpm grinder with a gray wheel.

Aug 01, 2011· I went through several sander belts on a recent stair refinishing job. Not that the belts wore out, they broke. Yes I had them on the right way. Can I remove the existing spicing tape and put on new tape of some ...

Jan 28, 2007· Looking for a 1″ vertical belt sander that is belt driven (so pulleys can be changed to slow belt speed). Tried searching the Internet for tool manufacturers, even checked Grainer, and all 1″ belt sanders I was able to find have direct drive from the motor shaft. At 3450 RPM this is a much much faster belt speed than I want.

Feb 19, 2013· I bought one of the Lee Valley 1" strip sanders. I had a motor already so I just bought the sander. The tool rest came with it but it was hard to adjust. I took the bolt out that came with it and added a longer carriage bolt, a spacer and a plastic handle to tighten it. This made adjusting it much easier and it now locks in place.

by hand or on a power machine such as a belt sander. The purpose of the sanding is to clean off the oxidation and roughen the tube so that the glue will have a better adhesion surface. 3. Plug the ends of the tubes with the material of your choice. Some use base wax (a dental product), or play dough, or even a slice of potato. Just push the ...

Apr 17, 2012· I recently purchased a Harbor Freight 1x30 Belt Sander and separately ordered a 1x30 leather belt from Lee Valley (Surgi-Sharp by Wheatland). The belt seems a little smaller than all abrasive belts from Harbor Freight or Lee Valley. I have to coax it on the wheels with the tensioning knob loosed all the way. But when I turned the sander on, the ...

Adjustable belt sander sands flat workpieces as well as inside and outside curves, while the disc sander handles smaller workpieces. Belt sander takes a 6" W x 48" L sanding belt (one 80-grit included), and the disc sander takes a 9"-diameter abrasive disc (one 80-grit included). Also includes a floor stand. Easy tension adjustment. Cast iron base.
